Vacation in your own backyard

Due to some unforseen illness in my immediate family (my father had stomach flu like you wouldn’t believe), Future Husband and I ended up staying in my hometown’s lone hotel on Friday night before the bridal shower. (Because the manager is a distant relative, we even got a discount – sweet!) On Saturday while I was waiting for my mom to take me to church, I found myself killing time in the hotel lobby looking at travel brochures. First and … Continue reading

Updates

I updated my NetWorthIQ site today … the numbers are still kind of ugly, but I see some positive things happening. I’ve been a bit frustrated lately with my debt journey because all of the extra money I’ve been making has been going towards things like my car insurance and dental bills instead of my credit card debt. I know that I have to pay off these bills, but when the numbers on my credit card debt only budge a … Continue reading

What are you downloading tomorrow?

Tomorrow, Oprah’s website will be offering a free download of Jean Chatzky’s book “The Difference.” According to the site: “Learn the top five things you can do to thrive during tough times, myths and facts about the wealthy and what barriers stand between you and financial security.” To be honest, I’ve never heard of this lady, but it’s a free finance book. Details may be found here.

Gym and appetizers – irony is ahead

With the wedding a bit more than a month away, I’ve been better about hitting the gym (OK – I’ve gone two times in the last two days – that’s a new record for me considering I haven’t been for a looooonnnng time). Anyway – as I was walking out last night, I noticed a stack of paper slips and I picked one up. “For Club Members Only! 1/2 Price Appetizers at [Insert Local Bar Here].” Well, it’s nice to … Continue reading

Another reason to be proactive …

One of my coworkers died this morning on her way to work. Details are sketchy, but Minnesota got another dusting of snow (dusting? Who am I kidding – the skies opened up and we got dumped on) and this person was killed in a car crash. Luckily, she elected to take advantage of the life insurance offered by our company and she opted to take the largest policy offered to our employees – so that’s money her family will see … Continue reading

Because you really wanted to know …

Beks posted this over at Financial Hack and because I’m a sucker for these sorts of things, I’m making you suffer. If you feel inclined to post it on your blogs, leave me a comment so I can learn more about you all! 1. Do you like Bleu Cheese? Plain, on salads, in sandwiches … oh how I love bleu cheese. 2. Have you ever been drunk? I cannot tell a lie, so I will plead the Fifth. 3. Do … Continue reading

Thoughts on time management … or lack thereof

Last Tuesday, I thought of a stunning post that I could write for you all. It was going to be the Great American snippet of blog posts and it would inspire understanding! OK – so it wasn’t that good, but it seemed like a good one when I started making little notes to myself about what I wanted to convey. The ironic part? I wanted to write about time management – but then I ran out of time until this … Continue reading

In case you didn’t know …

According to this article from CNN.com “frugal is the new black.” I struggle with my frugality at times (he-llo Jimmy John’s addiction), but I think it’s funny how mainstream media has tailored its message to conform to these tough economic times – i.e. – the Walmart commercials that talk about the cost of a restaurant dinner for a family of four. Save that money by buying these oven-ready meals! (Or save even more by preparing them from scratch.) The new … Continue reading

Tips for spending wedding cash

With the wedding coming up next month, Future Husband and I need to put the finishing touches on our wedding registry. For us – opinionated but somehow indecisive – this has been almost a bigger hurdle than splitting up the guest list between who gets to come to the wedding and who is on the reception-only list. (It’s a small church. Very small and I think I already have sent out too many invites for the ceremony.) FH and I … Continue reading

Memories of who I used to be

A few weeks back I decided to buy a new pair of black pants for work. I found a pair that was on sale ($7), but when I went to another store, I found a different pair that fit better, were also on sale and were just a better deal all around. On Monday I returned the pair I had decided to return and while the clerk was processing my returned item, I found myself shoulder-to-shoulder with another woman who … Continue reading
