The hard part about being a mentor

I’ve been blessed when it comes to the people that I consider mentors in my life – partly because of the number of people that I’ve looked up to and have been blessed by their knowledge and partly because I am still in contact with most of them. Mentoring started with my sixth-grade teacher Mr. Lonning. He had been a principal at a nearby school that closed because of budget cuts in my school district. I will never forget the … Continue reading

Eliminating Food Waste

I’ve really been enjoying Katy Wolk-Stanley’s blog “The Non-Consumer Advocate’s Blog.” I especially appreciate her motto: “Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.” Her musings find their way into my inbox on a daily basis and her writing style is perfectly fit for my busy life – short, sweet and to the point. Some of her recent posts have been concerned with eliminating food waste. And instead of hiding my head in shame because I … Continue reading

Time to get over my fear of bird poop?

I grew up on a farm in rural Iowa and one of my favorite memories from childhood is the scent and the feel of stuff that was hung out on the clothesline that my grandpa had sunk into a pool of concrete about 40 some years ago. I don’t know that my mom was trying to be a frugal farmwife or if she liked the scent as much as I did, but in the early 1990s, my folks took out … Continue reading

Living in the Now

I have one coworker of mine who is ridiculous about sending me email forwards, but every once in awhile she’ll send me one that’s pretty good. Here’s today’s offering: Written By Regina Brett of The Plain Dealer, Cleveland, Ohio who writes “My odometer rolled over in August, so here is the column once more”: 1. Life isn’t fair, but it’s still good. 2. When in doubt, just take the next small step. 3. Life is too short to waste time … Continue reading

Interesting things I saw today …

On my way to work, I saw the ubiquitous summer garage sale signs, but I saw an advertisement that I had never seen before. Instead of a “garage sale” I saw an arrow pointing toward a “man sale” and the items involved included hunting, fishing and sporting goods. I thought that was a nifty idea and it took my will power to not turn and scope it out. *~*~*~*~*~*~ As part of my quest to build social capital in this … Continue reading

One more down …

I had my wisdom teeth surgically removed when I was living in Willmar. That was probably about five years ago and all that I really remember from the experience was watching the “Scarlett” made-for-TV miniseries (a crappy continuation of Margaret Mitchell’s “Gone With the Wind”), eating lots of mashed potatoes and going out with my newspaper buddies the next night and mixing my pain meds with a Bud Light. Good times. When I entered my Debt Management Program (DMP), I … Continue reading

Wills, estate planning, etc.

I think that everyone needs a friend who is a lawyer. Maybe you don’t talk to this person on a regular basis or they come over on Tuesday nights to play poker. A lawyer friend is just a nice asset – I’ve used my lawyer friend in Northfield on a couple of occasions – mostly when I’m writing fiction. My lawyer friend – I’ll be honest, I call him Brother Carl, because when we got to know each other, he … Continue reading
