Vacationing on the cheap
I’ve spent time in Europe and the Middle East, but to be honest – I’m not much of a vacationer. I don’t know if this is something that has been true my entire life or if this is a product of marriage, but when it comes to vacations – I’ve mooched off the goodwill of others or caught quick overnight trips with my hubby. This upcoming weekend is no exception. For the past five years, my regular “vacation” has been … Continue reading
Living off the bounty of the land
I don’t know if it was the weird summer of cool temperatures that we had or the fact that I’m a crappy gardener, but my tomato plants performed worth SQUAT this summer. So far, I’ve had one tomato show up and have about three or four more that are ready to be picked. My dad told me that it was because of the cool summer we had this year in the Midwest – I personally think he was just being … Continue reading
Just shoot me: Do I really need a flu shot?
First and foremost, the USDA is imploring people to stop calling H1N1 the “swine flu.” And as the proud daughter of a pig farmer, I’ll spread that message as well. But whether it’s swine flu, ostrich flu or just the plain ‘ol flu – I have a confession to make: Aside from the time in high school when I was working in the healthcare industry and they were mandatory – I have never had a flu shot. And even though … Continue reading
File this under “obvious”: Living through a recession can have long-term impacts
I came across this article in Time Magazine the other day entitled: “Living Through A Recession Can Have a Lasting Impact on the Young.” I probably shouldn’t treat this topic with the sarcasm that I gave it in my post title, but it always amazes me how people get paid to quantify what everyone already suspects and get published to state the obvious. It is interesting through to think that today’s anthropologists and historians are watching and waiting to see … Continue reading
Decluttering: Breaking up with my email subscriptions
Sometimes I wonder how I got into the mess that I’m in financially. And like my ballooning waistline or the stack of unread books, magazines and articles that I’ve clipped out over the years and have failed to file – I’m beginning to notice a trend. When it comes to my life, I’m pretty damn undisciplined. Don’t get me wrong – I show up at work every day. I do hold down two jobs and I do laundry on a … Continue reading
Tweet for a chance to win
I’m at the cab company this weekend and have been going through a slog of old emails. I usually try to avoid product endorsement in general, but this one was too tempting to keep to myself. Wise Bread is currently offering gift cards to TJ Maxx to a few lucky readers/tweeters who comment on a recent post they’ve done extolling the virtues of shopping at TJ Maxx. Anyway – the rules of the contest are posted here. While I’m not … Continue reading
Let’s take a moment …
I’m not normally a sappy person (although I do cry during sappy commericals, chick flicks, inspirational sports films, etc. – it’s just one of those weird things about my psyche.) but I am going to jump on my sturdy soapbox for a second and ask my readers to take a brief moment to reflect about today, September 11th. I was working in the newspaper industry when the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center collapsed, when a plane averted crashing … Continue reading
Cash for my crappy fridge?
First and foremost – I probably shouldn’t diss my refrigerator in case karma decides to bite me and cause my fridge to spontaneously combust or stop keeping my favorite yogurt cool. But the hubby and I are excited – we may not have qualified for the government’s “Cash for Clunkers” program when it came to our cars, but the government might be rolling out a new program later this year to replace older appliances. Here’s the article that my hubby … Continue reading
Aliens did not abduct me, the closet ate me?
Wow, I have been lax at writing … so first and foremost, sincere apologies. I swear that I was not the victim of an alien abduction. Debt collectors did not spirit me away either. I was abducted by summer. But now, summer is winding down so I have returned from my mental vacation and am back to bother you all with my random ramblings. On the debt front – I am well on my way to being done with the … Continue reading
