I've noticed that a lot of these things for me are novelties when they first come out and I spend a lot of time on them and then they "settle in" to my normal routine with everything else. Facebook for me has become a time-saver in a lot of ways - I generally use it to communicate with various groups of people in my social circle quickly, and get quicker responses than using email or of course the telephone. And it has allowed me to get in touch with some people that I would not otherwise have had the opportunity to do so.

I also have general rule that the people I have in my social media networks are people I've met in real life. It's not that there isn't value in meeting people online - sometimes it's the only way to find people who have some particular common interest, who are in a similar situation, etc. - a very powerful tool for people who have no other way to find people like them in certain situations. But it doesn't replace the "real world" either.

I think a detox is an excellent idea. Too many people tune in to Facebook, or electronic chatter that slightly entertains, but does not build real, lasting relationships. But, it's just like TV, some poeple are just going to search for some entertainment to get them through to bedtime and before they know it, life is over. I am a firm member of the turn it off and tune into real life encampment.
