Alternatives to Netflix

I whined the other day about the impending price increase for Netflix. Even though I remember how much I used to spend renting movies, it’s kind of like the mindlessness of a monthly gym fee or any other monthly fees that a person has. You use it or you lose it. My husband and I know this – but we’re not entirely sure what we’re doing just yet. Here are a couple of articles I found this morning – one … Continue reading

New frugal trick

It is dangerously hot out in Minnesota right now. Supposedly, the oppressive heat wave that the Midwest is under is supposed to let up after 1 a.m. tomorrow morning, but in the meantime there’s been no way around it. Our central air conditioning unit has been running continuously since the end of last week and although I’m not trying to recreate fall-like temperatures and we try to be reasonable about where we set our thermostat, I’m not going to lie … Continue reading

A time to whine?

I had a surprise waiting for me in my email inbox on Tuesday. Netflix announced that it was going to boost the price of the current plan that my husband and I subscribe to – the plan where we get DVDs one-at-a-time (unlimited though, during the month) and unlimited streaming. What currently costs me about $10.00 will now jump to $16 if I still want to keep both options. Otherwise, I can just get DVDs or just stream videos – … Continue reading

The logic for and against combining finances

Last month, I let you all know that after a handful of years cohabiting and over two years of marriage (or as my husband just informed me “two looooooong years.” Sigh.), my husband and I finally took a plunge of a different kind: We decided to combine our incomes into one checking account. It’s been about a month now and so far the transition from two bank accounts into one has been relatively uneventful. (Although, it’s always a pleasant surprise … Continue reading

Making payments …

I did something today that I haven’t done in a very long time. Something I haven’t had to do since I got out from under the burden of credit card debt over two years ago. I had to pay my credit card bill. I’ve explained in previous posts that the company I work for has some sort of program through Diners Club Mastercard that offers said card to its consultants. There are some perks with it – it communicates directly … Continue reading

Ch-ch-ch-changes!

Two major things have happened in my life recently that I’d like to share with you all: One – I had over 900 emails in my personal email box. Thanks to the wonder that we call “Google,” I was able to archive all of them and start with a clean slate. My oh my that felt divine. And now, to thwart temptation and to keep that clean inbox feeling, I’m taking care of emails as they come in and unsubscribing … Continue reading

Grocery store adventures

I had a quick little frugal moment yesterday that I wanted to share. Literally, as it was happening, the thought in my head was “I will have to tell my DR101 peeps about this!” (I’m kind of nerdy like that.) Anyway – it was the silliest thing that happened. I have an aversion to hamburger buns – I like them on their own, but if I’m eating a hamburger off the grill (or anywhere for that matter), I really do … Continue reading

Correspondence from the home office

You would think that since I work from home, I’d have more time to blog about my frugal life (I save $50 a week by not commuting to a job! Woo!), but to be honest – last week was one of the fastest weeks of my life and I have no clue where the heck that it went, let alone tell you how the middle of June is nearly upon us. I’ll write more about some of the things that … Continue reading

Home improvements = money

We’re going to call this the “ultimate Diet Coke break.” I’m sitting here in my home office and looking out the window at the hunky guys who are taking down trees in my backyard. As much as the scenery is appreciated, the removal of an overgrown, dying pine tree and an annoying walnut tree (along with stump removal of a lilac that my mother-in-law and I removed last summer), is costing a pretty penny. But we’re paying cash and regaining … Continue reading

Thankful that I have a credit card

When I started my new job, I was given the opportunity to apply for a credit card. Technically, the card is “through” my company – i.e., anything that I charge on it can be automatically transferred to my expense report and it provides other discounts and benefits through some vendors we typically utilize. However, at the end of the day, er, billing cycle, the bill comes to me. Not the company. When I first got my employment packet and saw … Continue reading
