Defending my choices
Ever since my friend and coworker Greg got this crazy idea to buy hens so he could sell free range eggs to his coworkers, I’ve been shelling out $2 a dozen to buy “Greg’s Eggs.” When I’m eating an egg a day (usually on workday mornings), a dozen usually lasts me about a couple of weeks – give or take what I’m doing for baking. And given that the $2 is on par with what organic eggs are at my … Continue reading
Things to look forward to …
I’m in my last week at my current job. This is my last Monday here and I’m beginning to feel my smile painfully glue itself across my face when another person approaches to ask me what my next adventure is. It’s not because I’m annoyed at the questions – it’s just that I really am not fond of talking about myself and every person who stops me serves as a mental reminder of what a great year it’s been here … Continue reading
Free Book!
I was perusing through a magazine last night and found a free book offer from Proven Winners – I typically find their plants at Home Depot and have had some pretty decent luck with them. (In the cases where my plants die, it’s typically because of my black thumb and the influx of squirrels that call my backyard their home.) Anyway … they are offering a free 32-page Gardener’s Idea Book. Just click here. Spring is HERE!
We call this a “game changer”
There are many posts that I’ve wanted to write over the past few weeks. Such as … how ironic is it that you can spend $200 on a hotel room and have it be an absolutely crappy experience? Or how Gretchen Rubin’s “Happiness Project” makes for good airplane reading? Or how I should not be let loose in airports because I have a penchant for finding and buying the most nutritionally WRONG food in the food courts? (Although – I … Continue reading
Read this blog …
I have previously mentioned the writer’s group that I had joined during the month of March. It was only a four-week commitment, but it was a great chance to get to know some other writers in my community and to do something that I rarely do: Actually read my work to other people. Beyond the blogging world, which I am mightily fond of, I like to dabble in fiction. I don’t know that I’m any good at it, but I … Continue reading
… And then what?
I am an unapologetic and avid reader of the New York Times online. I say “unapologetic” because as an ex-journalist, some of my friends look at me as if I’ve grown another head when I admit that I do not currently have a newspaper subscription, am usually ignorant of the events that go on in my city, but read my news online. I guess I am “that person” who has contributed to the downfall of print. My love of the … Continue reading
Weird Frugal Thing: Vegetable Stock
**Editor’s note … I meant this post to be the first one discussing “weird frugal things.” Of course, life got in the way and I published the wrong one first. I’ve been participating in a small group of writers lately – been working on my fiction, but more often than not, I come back from a Thursday night session invigorated having brought back something that I can use in my day-to-day life. The other night, I was encouraging another writer … Continue reading
SPRING!
Spring is here in Minnesota with a vengeance … it’s been raining since I got up this morning. Under normal circumstances, this might bum me out, but it’s washing away all of the snow that we’ve accumulated and is uncovering the muddy brown lawns that will soon turn green. Oh, I cannot wait for that. My husband and I took a road trip yesterday to go see my father. First and foremost, he had a birthday on Friday and he’s … Continue reading
The $30 Haircut
First off, I need to tell you guys something – I think that when it comes to my appearance and how long it takes for me to get ready in the morning, I am one of the most low-maintenance people on this planet. Other than men. I don’t even own a hairbrush. (Then again, I have really short hair, so I don’t really need one.) I have also made the (foolish) claim that it is impossible for me to get … Continue reading
Thinking of you guys …
This has been an odd week in my life, one that has helped me define some priorities … I’ll tell you all about that later, but in the meantime, I have to tell you guys that I’ve been talking about you lately. I fancy myself a writer. But I have to be honest – sometimes when I tell people that I’m a writer or that I have writing aspirations, I feel like I’m a six-year-old kid telling my mommy that … Continue reading
