Daunted by Minimalism

I’m catching up on reading about a zillion emails in my personal email box. While I’m relatively happy with the person that I am in my 30s, I have to be honest … I really wish sometimes that I was a more organized person. The person who actually remembered where her Netflix disc was so she could return the crappy Brad Pitt movie and move onto a film more important like “Red.” (Helen Mirren. With a machine gun! Bruce Willis! … Continue reading

Thinking about DIY …

With more funds available to us to do some of the home upgrades and remodels that we’ve put off for so long, I find myself thinking about the priorities that we need to set and wondering how much of the work we can do ourselves? I forwarded an email to my husband today from a big box retailer that promised a weekend bathroom remodel for less than $500 and I found myself tempted by the smiles of the folks featured … Continue reading

A Thrift Store Tutorial

Wow … it just seems like yesterday I was celebrating the New Year by going through old magazines and whittling down piles of paper. Fast forward and tomorrow is the 31st. And I’m still working on piles of paper and trying to be a neater and more organized person in general. Talk to me in July and this might still be the status quo of my life. Anyway – along with the physical cleaning that I did today, I also … Continue reading

Happy New Year! And a book giveaway

I don’t know if this is a sign of the times or if I’m getting older, smarter or what, but last year’s ball drop wasn’t witnessed by my husband or I. I was sitting in bed going through a mountain of magazines, clipping out what I wanted to keep and pitching the rest, while my husband was downstairs in the basement, playing a computer game. We were both drinking water, because we were slightly dehydrated … from the multiple pots … Continue reading

No such thing as cheap …

The snow started falling in our neighborhood on Friday evening and it didn’t stop until sometime last night, leaving us with 16 inches of snow. Although it’s an inconvenience, there’s been something nice about being forceably confined to home. Half of my Christmas baking is done, I slept until 9 this morning and now I’m looking at cell phone plans, because that’s something that I’ve put off forever. And here’s what I’m coming up with – there’s no such thing … Continue reading

Wishing everyone good things …

This night is a particularly good one … it’s a Wednesday that feels like a Friday. As we are wont to do on nights when we don’t have to get up early for work in the morning, my husband (or I) brew a pot of coffee and we sit in front of our computers, catching up on emails (me), playing computer games (him), chattering about things – usually picking on each other about one thing or another. Our lives are … Continue reading

Simplifying My Life

I’m participating in a study group at my office that is devoted to learning how to “simplifying your life.” The group is working off of a seven-week program developed by Marcia Ramsland. The book we’re studying is called “Simplify Your Life” and before you go out there and look into this program – I will warn the more secular of those among you that this is based off of a verse in the book of Proverbs. (The combination of organization … Continue reading

Dealing with temptation

While I was driving home the other day from work, I had a thought: What if I took a non-consumer compact in 2011 and limited how much I spent on “new” items? (See “The Compact” on Wikipedia. Oh how I love you, Wikipedia.) Seriously … I already love Savers. I already have trimmed way back on my consumption of products ever since I started living with my hubby and have paid off my consumer debt. And hell – this former … Continue reading

The (never-ending) war on STUFF

I’ve talked about how I appreciate people who can truly practice minimalism. There are blogs that are devoted to paring down your possessions to the bare necessities and the feeling of … well, freedom, for lack of a better word … when you are living within your means and are living without a whole lot of extra STUFF to clutter your days, your shelves and your spare rooms. (Oh yes, home office – I’m talking to you. We will meet … Continue reading

Is minimalism for me?

Somewhere I can hear my mother emphatically stating “no!” in answer to the question that I put up above. Is minimalism for me? As I look around my desk, I see two notary stamps (one with my maiden name and one with my married name); a stuffed, plush Tigger that a dear friend sent me for Christmas a year or two ago; a mug from a newspaper job I left four years ago; a jewelry box that have a pair … Continue reading
