Reminders of the past

I’m not sure if this was something that was worthy of celebration, but in all of the busyness of fall, I realized the other day that I had passed the one-year anniversary of getting my credit card debt paid off. And while this certainly warrants a “woo hoo!”, I’m kind of embarrassed to admit that I only realized this because I was cleaning up our basement for some company and I found old credit card statements from 2008. One year … Continue reading

Money is everywhere

In an effort to make progress towards another one of my “32 things” that I hope to accomplish in this year on this earth, I’ve started attending church again. (Although this is only the second Sunday in a row that I’ve darkened the door of a church sanctuary … what is it that they say about 30 days to make a habit?) I have a complicated relationship with going to church. I have been reared in the Christian faith and … Continue reading

I saved money today …

… by using coupons. My day was pretty much defined by the coupons that I had in hand, so I need to share: – I did some Christmas shopping today. Herbergers had their Community Days sale and a co-worker of mine gave me two of her coupon books. (These books were $5 a piece, all the proceeds go to charity – I’m so grateful to Cindy for sharing!). I used a $10 coupon to get a new shower curtain for … Continue reading

Simplifying My Life

I’m participating in a study group at my office that is devoted to learning how to “simplifying your life.” The group is working off of a seven-week program developed by Marcia Ramsland. The book we’re studying is called “Simplify Your Life” and before you go out there and look into this program – I will warn the more secular of those among you that this is based off of a verse in the book of Proverbs. (The combination of organization … Continue reading

Detours can be a good thing

I woke up this morning with the intention of hitting the gym as soon as I got out of bed, dressed and over to the gym where I belong. Which was a great idea, in theory, until I remembered that the gym doesn’t open up until 10 on Sundays and here it was 8:30 in the morning. So I made it over to the grocery store, which was supposed to be stop 2 of the day and I got smacked … Continue reading

This frugal thing is working (knock on wood)

OK – So I know it’s too early to totally congratulate myself on how I’m trying to turn around my spending, but I like to think that I’m making progress. Case in point – yesterday. It was a rough day with work ending after 7 p.m. for me. And since I knew that Husband would be gone and playing games with his friends, I was going to stop by the grocery store and pick up a redbox rental to keep … Continue reading

Taking that frugal vacation

Everywhere I turn there’s evidence that this summer is coming to a close – articles on various websites about back-to-school shopping, co-workers who talk about their kids or grandkids returning to school, whether it’s grade school or college … In my opinion, when you’re pre-children, post-education or both, summer vacation really doesn’t impact you. I don’t have to worry about finding extended daycare hours for my kids who are on summer break. I don’t have to scramble to register for … Continue reading

Would you do this to your floor?

OK – this is the craziest thing that I’ve seen in awhile, but with an office remodel coming up in my future (and a tiny budget to accomplish it with), I have to admit – I am intrigued. Imagine it … replacing the flooring in one of your bedrooms for about $70. No, you didn’t just get one heck of a deal by getting carpet or flooring remnants, you have used kraft paper to cover the floor of your room. … Continue reading

The importance of reading fine print

This is the first Saturday in awhile that my husband and I have been home. The morning found us in front of our computers reading our favorite news sources and columns, but then we took advantage of our down time … and then we started cleaning. While going through papers that I was intending to shred for the compost bin, I found a letter from my bank. And while I usually just give this mail a cursory glance before filing … Continue reading
