Advice for grads

The Class of 2010 is hitting me hard this year – no less than five loved ones are graduating from high school and making their way into the Great Beyond. Luckily for me, three of those graduates are triplets and they are having a combined party, so my road trips aren’t as numerous as they could be. The other day as I was thinking of these kids – I traveled with the triplets when I was in college and when … Continue reading

This world is a challenge to my finances and to my hairstyle

I have a lot of things going on in my life right now, a few of them that I’ve only shared with those who are in my inner circle. (And no, family members and friends who read this blog – I’m not pregnant.) There are a lot of days where I end up feeling very sad and defeated. I have this strange little uplift that comes to me at about 5:15 p.m., when I’m pulling into the driveway of my … Continue reading

Do I need a social media detox?

For those of you who follow a Christian church calendar, we are now entering the season the Lent. Or we have entered it … however that works. When I was growing up, we never gave up anything for Lent. I don’t know if that was my parents, if it was my denomination, if it was the hippie-ish pastor who liked to play his electric guitar in church … all I know is that while my friends gave up stuff like … Continue reading

We call these ‘oh sh!t’ moments

There’s something dangerous about hitting “send” on what should be a perfectly innocuous email. My reliance on email has made me relatively lax on some stuff when it comes to personal correspondence – just ask my husband when the last time was that I actually used capitalization and punctuation in a missive to him. When it comes to business, I utilize the skills that should just be second-hand to this English major. Recently, I’ve been trying to grow a base … Continue reading

Tired of temptation: Valentine’s Day 2010

Can I let you in on a little secret about me? Here it is: I really suck at being frugal. Sure, I shop the sales rack and Savers for my clothing. I do clip coupons, I do sign up for rewards at my favorite retailers whenever possible and I am credit card debt free. But start waving around a “holiday” of little or no significance, I feel this awareness growing in my psyche … who cares if I know that … Continue reading

Do I love it enough to pay for it?

I cannot lie – I have been waiting for this day for awhile. As certain as death and taxes, I knew that my (free) love affair with the New York Times online couldn’t last. And now the news is certain, starting January 2011, I will have to pay for my love of the eloquently written word. The New York Times is not the first newspaper to charge for online access to read their articles. Heck, the first company that I … Continue reading

How to find a reputable charity

Goodwill seems to be everywhere these days. My boyfriend George Clooney is hosting a telethon to help Haiti that will feature my other boyfriend Robert Pattinson. (Oh wait … this is a public forum read by my husband. There’s no one but you, honey …) Irregardless of my Hollywood crushes, disaster seems to bring out the best in each of us – whether its donating blood or going on a mission trip for Hurricane Katrina efforts or the current Haiti … Continue reading

Sometimes telling off the boss is a good thing

I should preface this piece by saying that I have only told off two of my employers in my 10-year history of working … wait, that’s actually three times although I don’t think the first time really counts because I got all teary while doing it. While I feel like I have a strong personality, I still realize that there are certain people who a) sign my paycheck and that there are certain situations where you b) you have to … Continue reading

2010: Optimism and lots and lots of deep thoughts

Well, I’ve written this inaugural 2010 post about a dozen times and to be honest … every day that I’ve encountered in January has brought something different – some things good, some things bleh and some things that have caused me much speculation. Here are the things I’ve been thinking about: Work – I can’t say a lot about this right now because I’m very much in deep negotiations with my brain regarding what I want to do with my … Continue reading

Some of the best gifts in life aren’t things …

Whatever you celebrate, however you celebrate, etc., I hope that all of you had a wonderful holiday season. My husband and I actually braved the roads to get down to my folks’ house in Iowa and made it without trouble. The only mishap – if you would call it that – is that I didn’t finish Christmas shopping before I went to my folks’ house. Which meant going to Walmart on Christmas Eve. And gift cards for my nephews … … Continue reading
