Simple pleasures …

I hope you all have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend. I am really looking forward to this weekend because I have Monday off! Woo! A day off!

I’ll probably need that time to catch up on my Zzzs. I’ve recently had an epoch in my life and it’s been causing some sleepless nights. What’s going on, you ask? I will tell you. My number finally came up at our local library and I’m reading the “Twilight” books. And my God … I’m already on the third one and I started reading in earnest on Monday. I’ll probably be done with all four by Memorial Day and wow … I just love it when I read something that compels me to stay up way past my bedtime and encourages me to sit in my car over my lunch break so I can catch up on this really terrible tween romance that no self-respecting 30-year-old ex-English major should be devouring like water.

So while my husband has been teasing me for my lack of sleep, I’m reminded of those simple pleasures – hot summer days sitting in lawn chairs and drinking lemonade; fishing with my dad; staying up way past my bedtime to follow fictional characters’ exploits … all sorts of good things that don’t cost a lot of money but seem to bring me more satisfaction than spending money on something I won’t remember buying five years from now.

Again – have a good weekend. If any of you get the notion and your local American Legion or VFW have any kind of celebrations on Monday – go. My political leanings are more left than anything, but I am perpetually in awe of our nation’s veterans and the sacrifices they’ve made for our country. Thank you kindly to all of the soldiers.

  1. What is it about those dang books. I got through them super fast too, and usually I plod along in a book.

  2. I agree with you on the simple pleasures of reading. I am also a 30-year old ex-English major, and my fiance teases me endlessly about my escapist literature whose IQ appears to be way below my required academic reading back in college: Judith Michael, Penny Vincenzi, Barbara Taylor Bradford, Judith Krantz, Jackie Collins… need I go on? Besides, the mental escapade puts me on a pleasant high that I could never get from shopping and it keeps me at home, away from spending temptations.
Enjoy your long weekend and hopefully all the sunshine you can get!
