Advice for grads

The Class of 2010 is hitting me hard this year – no less than five loved ones are graduating from high school and making their way into the Great Beyond. Luckily for me, three of those graduates are triplets and they are having a combined party, so my road trips aren’t as numerous as they could be. The other day as I was thinking of these kids – I traveled with the triplets when I was in college and when … Continue reading

My Gardening Update

I haven’t had as much luck with my tomatoes as my cohort Beks has had over at Blogging Away Debt. I had a bunch of beautiful tomato seedlings that I thought were ready to “harden” outdoors and instead of growing bigger and ready themselves for planting, they decided to wilt and die on me. I still have more seedlings that are ready for eventual planting, but really – I wonder if next year I should forget the seedling idea and … Continue reading

You can keep your store credit card. No, really …

I’ve been pretty darn frumpy lately – although my general mood has lightened with the new job and all sorts of good things, I still dress like someone hit me with the ugly stick. And not only one strike, but several. It doesn’t help that I work in an area that is dominated with women and that they are all fashion plates. It is ridiculous how gorgeous they all are. With all these things in mind, I decided to budget … Continue reading

Sunday Roundup

You were almost treated to a post today about the joys of Dumpster diving (when I was 13 I found a platter in the local dump that was an antique and later sold for $10! You should see the awesome umbrella that I found at the side of the road that usually retails for $30! It was tossed because it was broken, but I only needed to make a few repairs!), but I’m doing a bit more research for this … Continue reading

You should be reading this …

… I am fascinated by people who have more self control and restraint than I have, so it has been with interest lately that I’ve been watching the sidebar of this blog and seeing admin’s posts on “Eating Well on $1 A Day.” This isn’t the first time this has been attempted on the Internet (and who knows who was doing this before blogging and telling every weird detail of our lives), Kerri Leonard and Christopher Greenslate recently published a … Continue reading

The joys of mattress shopping

Something happened to my husband and I a couple of months ago that has haunted our dreams. … We watched the “Dirty Jobs” episode where host Mike Rowe took a dirty job collecting used mattresses. What always amuses me about this particular episode is that Mike Rowe barely flinches in the face of animal poo, but something about the thought of what is lurking in used mattresses turns totally grosses him out and gives him the heeby-jeebies. Incidentally, ever since … Continue reading

A new way to save …

Now that I’m done working at the cab company, my husband and I have been fulfilling familial obligations and taking a fair share of road trips. And although we love to see our family members at the end of these journeys, one of the best parts about spending three hours in a car is that my husband and I just talk without the usual interruptions of our life. We talk about the things we need to do to the house … Continue reading

Travel Tricks

I’m going to put this out there: I’m a pretty good traveler. I lived out of a suitcase for six months when I was in my early 20s, I’m the kind of person who can go away for a weekend with nothing but a backpack and when airlines decided to start charging for checked bags, I didn’t freak out because a) I rarely fly and b) if I do fly, I usually only bring a carry-on that can get me … Continue reading

Happy Mother’s Day!

I was lucky enough today to get to see both of the moms in my life – my mother-in-law and my very own mom. I’ve learned a lot about frugality from my mother-in-law – she’s taught me to check my receipts when I go to Hy-Vee because if they charge you the wrong price for an item and you catch it before you leave the store, you get that item for free, plus a refund. How cool is that? Also … Continue reading

Thrift on the Web

I used to really love shopping. That was one of the traits of my personality that got me into credit card debt when I was in my 20s and fresh out of college. On the weekends when I was lonely and had some time to kill, you could find me at the mall using my store credit cards to pad my (already ridiculously large) wardrobe. Some clothes were necessities – the suits that I bought for my first job out … Continue reading
